What is prophecy?
Prophecies are basically messages from God! So, one might ask, why would someone in their right mind have such a feeling towards a message from God? treating it with contempt? Several reasons! They don't like the person delivering the message. Second, they don't appreciate the warning because they don't have any desire to obey the message, and finally, they don't trust the truthfulness of the message.
How could someone treat prophecy with contempt?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-22: Always be rejoicing.+
17 Pray constantly 18 Give thanks for everything.+ This is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not put out the fire of the spirit.+ 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt.+ 21 Make sure of all things;+ hold fast to what is fine. 22 Abstain from every form of wickedness. Here we see Paul's admonition to be careful of this matter. Some examples in the Hebrew scriptures and in the Greek scriptures also took such a stand, for various reasons. However, the inspired word was always clear!
The word "disdainfully", how does it apply to this subject?
The word "disdainfully" originates from the Old French word "desdeignier," meaning "scorn, refuse, or repudiate". "Desdeignier" itself is formed from two parts: "des," meaning "do the opposite of," and "deignier," meaning "treat with respect". Therefore, "disdainfully" essentially means acting with disapproval or contempt, in a proud and domineering manner. (E. G.www.google.com word origin search.) Clearly, ones that take such a stand should be extremely
careful of challenging God's messengers, for they could
actually be fighters against God.(Acts 5:39)
How does this attitude show disrespect for Jehovah's Authority?
Notice Num. 12:3 , and 16:1-3
Now the man Moses was by far the meekest of all the men+ on the face of the earth. ...Then Korʹah+ the son of Izʹhar,+ the son of Koʹhath,+ the son of Leʹvi,+ got up together with Daʹthan and A·biʹram the sons of E·liʹab,+ and On the son of Peʹleth, of the sons of Reuʹben.+ 2 They rose up against Moses along with 250 Israelite men, chieftains of the assembly, chosen ones of the congregation, prominent men. 3 So they gathered together against Moses and Aaron and said to them: “We have had enough of you! The whole assembly is holy,+ all of them, and Jehovah is in their midst.+ Why, then, should you exalt yourselves above the congregation of Jehovah?” We know the results of this confrontation; they were put to death for their opposition. Also, some complained about the Mana God provided to keep them alive until they reached the promised land, until they began to eat the food of that land, calling it "Contemptible Bread". It's very unwise not to respect any of Jehovah's fine provisions
